Over the last few months Sound Cycle, The Borders Youth Music Forum, and Eyemouth Sound, The Eyemouth Music Initiative, have been working with young musicians from across the Scottish Borders on a variety of different projects. Both have been in the recording studio and are delighted to be given the opportunity to hold a joint album launch at the Borders Book Festival.
The title of the album, “Weave” reflects the diverse music of young musicians who appear on the recordings, who although quite varied in sound and approach, all hail from the Scottish Borders , an area with such a unique identity and rich heritage.
Join Sound Cycle and a group of extremely talented young musicians for an evening of eclectic tunes and songs featuring some of our amazing bands and singers, including loop pedal maestro Millie Hanlon Cole, Guitar whizz Jack Hinks, members of the Eyemouth Sound Collective, with a special performance from Borders singer/songwriter Craig Jeffrey and more.
Here are some of the artists who will perform at the launch and feature on the album which will be available for streaming and download via Bandcamp and Soundcloud.
MILLIE HANLON COLE
Millie is from Peebles, and is a uniquely talented singer and songwriter ,who plays acoustic guitar and uses a loop pedal to achieve an amazing sound both live and in the studio. She began writing at the age of fourteen and has been performing at small local festivals and pubs, including this year’s Kendal Calling festival, ever since. She recreates the sounds of a ‘one woman band’ with the help of her loop station to create layers of alternative, acoustic melodies. Her influences are an eclectic mix of sounds ranging from The Smiths to the likes of Alt-J and Bombay Bicycle Club. She has also been compared to a young Laura Marling and KT Tunstall accompanied with an “impressive depth and range” vocally.
Erin is a guitarist and singer songwriter from Selkirk , currently studying nursing in Edinburgh.Erin grew up listening to Adele and Brandi Carlile , and starting teaching herself guitar and writing songs at the age of 15 . Erin has a beautiful voice and writes poignant and affecting songs with a pop sensibility. Sound Cycle have collaborated with Erin on a remix of one of her songs , and both her acoustic version and the remix appear on the album.
EGGSHELL GOBLIN ( EgGo)
Is a multi talented and extremely prolific composer of electronic music of different styles, from ambient to experimental to techno dance.
“Eggshell Goblin is a strange person in a strange place. His raw, untidy approach to music reflects his disorganized existence. Stretching over a wide variety of techniques, styles and emotions, he strives for something new and possibly a deeper understanding of himself”
Jack is a professional singer-songwriter and guitarist from the Borders now based in Edinburgh. Jack plays in many projects: The Loud Band – an improv instrumental outfit that compliments the spoken word of Edinburgh poetry titans the ‘Loud Poets’, local folk juggernauts Ekobirds (alongside Fiona and Sam), Americana project Coldsville, an acoustic duo with Singer-Songwriter and modern-day Dylan, Calum Baird, and his personal project, Hinks. Combining his heartfelt solo work with the grit of a six piece band, Jack uses a behemoth rhythm section, violins, piano, guitar and powerful vocal harmonies, to ensure that his songs wont leave your head for days.
JULEP are a very talented young vocal trio from Berwickshire, who’s sublime harmonies are captured in the studio for the first time for the album.
